Timer Tips & Tricks
For Better Timing and Productivity

Using a timer effectively can improve focus, productivity, and time management.  These tips show how to get more out of online timers, from simple countdowns to fully customized setups with sounds, shortcuts, and saved configurations.

The tips below cover both simple techniques and advanced features to help you begin timing faster, avoid mistakes, and get more value from your timer setups.

Keep Timer Visible for Sound

For reliable sound and alarms, keep timer visible on your screen.  Minimized windows or background tabs will not play audio reliably.

Precise Sound

Our timers use an advanced sound engine based on the WebAudio API, allowing sounds to start and stop instantly with precise timing.  This ensures alarms trigger exactly when expected, which is especially important for workouts, presentations, and time-sensitive tasks.

Cycled Sounds

Most of our sounds are designed to be repeated, so if the Bell sound is cycled for three times it will sound like three bells played.  Our timers allow you to repeat sounds up to 99 times.  So a Beep, Ding, Bell or Gong can be repeated 2, 3, 4, up to 99 times.  If you select a long sound like Buenos Aires 63s, and give it a 99 cycle value, it will play for over 1.5 hours.  To stop the alarm, just click the bell icon under the timer controls.

Use Any Sound from the Web

Customize your timer with virtually any sound available online.  Timer123 supports external audio files, allowing you to use alarms, music, or sound effects that fit your exact needs.

Many websites, such as Pixabay, offer thousands of free sound files you can use.  As long as the audio file is publicly accessible and supports browser playback (CORS-enabled), it can be used as your timer alarm.

Example sound links:

Cuban Tune

To use a custom sound, simply copy the link to the audio file and paste it into the timer's Basic Settings as your alarm sound.  When the timer completes, your selected audio will play instantly.

This makes it easy to create timers for different situations - use a gentle chime for focus sessions, a loud alarm for busy environments, or even music for workouts and events.

Note: External audio files may vary in performance depending on how they are encoded and hosted.  Some may include silence at the start or end, or load slightly slower on first use, especially longer files.  For precise timing, we recommend using short, trimmed audio clips or the built-in Timer123 sounds.

Built-in Timer123 sounds are optimized for instant playback and seamless looping, with no gaps between cycles.

Keyboard Shortcuts

These are key to making our timers light-switch simple to use.  Tap the space-bar and the timer starts, tap it again and the timer pauses.  We default all our timers to have the space-bar linked to the Start/Stop controls, but you can quickly set any key or keys on your keyboard to Start/Stop the timer.  Maybe you prefer the ArrowRight for Start/Stop.  In only a couple clicks you can set this up in Advanced Settings.

To get to Advanced Settings, first click the Settings icon under the timer controls, on the right.  Then in Basic Settings click the Advanced Settings link in the upper right corner.  Scroll down the Advanced Settings until you see those starting with 'Key'.  Click on Key Start to edit that setting.  Here is what that edit popup looks like . . .

To add the ArrowRight just type that key on your keyboard and click the Save button.  If you want the ArrowRight key to both Start and Stop the timer, then you need to also add the ArrowRight key to the Key Stop setting.  That's it, you're done.

Looping

The looping option allows you to repeat a timer countdown or count up.  This lets you have a subtle alarm sound every 7 minutes to nudge you to check that you are not daydreaming about vacationing in Hawaii or have not fallen down a YouTube rabbit hole.

Customization

We have 35 settings that you can set in the Basic and Advanced Settings area.  Then you can save a link to your configured timer to come right back to it later.  Some great customization features include turning off the title and tagline, making the time display digits larger, using colors you like, and the most powerful feature is replacing the background with an image.  Our Kitchen Timer and our Varsity Timer are examples of this.

Timer Sharing

All of our timers allow you to save a link that has your configuration in the link.  You can then share that link with anyone and when they click on it they will see and experience our timer the exact way that you set it up.  This makes it easy to share exact timer setups with others.

View Your Settings Changes

You can instantly see what timer settings you have adjusted by clicking on the share timer icon under the timer controls.  When you click this you are presented with a popup that lists each setting you adjusted.

Peek at Timer from Taskbar

On some systems (e.g. Windows), you can hover over your browser icon in the taskbar to see a live preview of your timer.  This can be a convenient way to check the remaining time without bringing the window to the front.

Note:  This behavior depends on your browser and operating system, and may not update in all situations.
