Free Online 5 Minute Timer

Five minutes is one of the most useful intervals in everyday life — short enough to stay sharp, long enough to actually accomplish something.  One click starts this timer instantly, no setup required.  When the five minutes are up, your alarm sounds and you're done.  It's that simple.

Under the hood, Timer123's timing engine counts down using real elapsed time rather than interval loops, so your 5 minute timer stays accurate even when your browser is under load.  Twenty years of online timer development went into getting that right.

What Can You Do in 5 Minutes?

Five minutes shows up constantly across work, school, fitness, and everyday home life:

  • Pomodoro breaks — The classic Pomodoro technique pairs 25-minute work blocks with 5-minute breaks.  This timer is built for that 5-minute break rhythm.
  • Classroom transitions — Give students exactly 5 minutes to pack up, switch activities, or move between stations.  Display the timer full-screen so the whole class can see the countdown.
  • Cooking and kitchen tasks — Soft-boiled eggs (4–5 minutes), steeping tea, resting a steak, draining pasta.  Five minutes in the kitchen goes fast — let the alarm catch it for you.
  • Meeting time-boxes — Give each speaker or agenda item a hard 5-minute limit.  The alarm keeps things moving without anyone watching the clock.
  • Fitness and intervals — Warm-up sets, plank holds, rest periods between lifts, or active recovery windows.  Loop the timer for back-to-back rounds.
  • Kids and routines — Tooth brushing, picking up toys, getting shoes on.  A visible countdown timer is far more motivating for kids than being told to hurry up.
  • Mindfulness and breathing — A focused 5-minute reset during the workday.  Set a calm alarm sound and use the full-screen display to minimize distractions.
  • Presentations and pitches — Timed Q&A windows, elevator pitch practice, or keeping demo segments on track.

Customize Your 5 Minute Timer

One click starts it as-is, but Timer123 gives you full control when you want it.  Open Settings to adjust:

  • Alarm sound — Choose from 50+ built-in sounds and tunes, or paste in a link to any web-accessible MP3 for a completely custom alert.  Preview sounds before committing.
  • Loop — Set the timer to restart automatically after it reaches zero. Perfect for interval training, or any repeating 5-minute workflow.
  • Display and colors — Adjust the time display size, font, color, and background to suit your environment.  Full light and dark mode support built in.
  • Resize to fill the screen — The timer display scales to fit your browser window.  Stretch it across a monitor or projector so it's readable from across the room.
  • Timer title — Label the timer for context — "Break", "Round 1", "Q&A", or whatever fits your situation.  The title saves with your configuration.
  • Keyboard shortcuts — Start, Stop, and Reset without touching the mouse.  Useful in presentations, classrooms, or when your hands are occupied.
  • Save and share your setup — Dial in your preferred alarm, display, and behavior settings once, then save and copy the URL via the icon under the timer display.  Share link with your team or class and they can load your exact configuration instantly.

5 Minute Timer — Common Questions

Does this timer work on phones and tablets?

Yes.  The timer works on any modern browser across desktop, mobile, and tablet.  The display scales automatically to fit your screen size.

Will the alarm sound if I switch to another tab?

For reliable audio, keep the timer visible in an active browser tab.  Browsers may throttle or mute background tabs, which can affect alarm playback.  If the alarm matters, keep the tab in view and window not minimized.

Can I loop the timer for repeated 5-minute intervals?

Yes — enable Loop in the settings panel and the timer resets and starts again automatically when it hits zero.  No need to click Start between rounds.

Can I use my own alarm sound?

Yes.  Paste a URL to an MP3 sound file hosted on the web into the alarm sound field. Website hosting sound file must have Cross-Origin Resource Sharing (CORS) enabled.  Timer123 can then use the sound file as your alert.  Use the Try link to confirm sound before you start timing.

How do I share this timer setup with my class or team?

Configure the timer — alarm, title, display, loop settings — then click the icon under the time display and copy the URL shown.  Anyone who opens that link loads your exact setup, ready to start with one click.

Is there a way to make the timer full screen?

Use Fit Width or Fit Height in the settings to scale the time display to fill your browser window.  For a true full-screen experience, combine that with your browser's full-screen mode (usually F11).
