Free Online Counter
A counter should get out of the way and just work — clean display, responsive controls, and no clutter between you and the count. This one starts at zero, responds instantly to a click or a keypress, and confirms every increment with a sound so you always know the action registered. Count up, count down, or both — it handles whatever you throw at it.
Behind the simple interface is a surprisingly capable tool. Set a count range, define color-coded levels to signal thresholds at a glance, save your exact setup as a bookmark, and share it with anyone who needs to count the same way. Everything adjusts to fit your task — not the other way around.
What to Count
Any situation where you need a reliable running total — without pen, paper, or a physical clicker:
- People at an event — Track attendance, arrivals, or departures in real time. Set a Count Max to enforce a room capacity limit and let the display color tell you when you're getting close.
- Inventory and stock — Count items on a shelf, in a bin, or coming off a line. The keyboard shortcuts keep your hands free and the pace steady without reaching for a mouse.
- Repetitions and sets — Reps, laps, sets, rounds. The audible click confirms each count so you can keep your eyes on your form instead of the screen.
- Survey and observation tallies — Count occurrences, behaviors, or responses during fieldwork or research. The keyboard lock feature lets you step away without risking an accidental count change.
- Animals and wildlife — Counting a flock, a herd, or cars in a parking lot. A fast keypress is all it takes to keep pace with things that move quickly.
- Production and quality checks — Count units completed or defects spotted on a line. Set count levels to change the display color when error counts reach a threshold worth flagging.
- Votes and scores — Tally votes in a meeting, points in a game, or scores in a competition. Multiple counters can run in separate browser tabs simultaneously for tracking more than one player or team.
- Anything else you need to count — The counter doesn't care what you're counting. If it's a number that needs to go up or down, it works.
Counter Features
A clean surface with serious capability underneath:
- Keyboard shortcuts — Space or Up Arrow to count up; Backspace or Down Arrow to count down. All four keys are reassignable in Settings if you need something different. Fast, hands-free counting without touching the mouse.
- Count sounds — An audible click confirms every up and down count. Choose from 35 built-in sounds or point to any web-accessible audio file. Separate sounds for up and down counts, each with its own volume control.
- Color-coded count levels — Define up to 6 count thresholds, each with its own display color. The display changes color automatically as the count crosses each level — useful for capacity limits, production targets, or any count where the range matters as much as the number. Colors are set independently for light and dark modes.
- Count range and increment — Set a Count Min and Count Max to keep the counter within a defined range. Change the increment to count by 2, 5, 10, or any whole number. Counts as low as -999,999 and as high as 999,999 are supported.
- Keyboard lock — Press L to lock the counter and prevent accidental counts while you step away. A padlock icon appears next to the controls when locked. Press L again to unlock. The lock and unlock keys are reassignable independently in Advanced Settings.
- Save and share your setup — Configure the counter exactly how you need it, then save the setup as a URL via the create link icon. Bookmark it for one-click access or share the link so others can use the same configuration instantly.
- Multiple counters at once — Open the counter in multiple browser tabs or windows to track several things simultaneously. Each tab holds its own count independently in real time.
- Works everywhere — Fully resizable and compatible with modern browsers on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS. The display scales to fit any screen size.
Counter — Common Questions
Does this counter work on phones and tablets?
Yes. The counter works on any modern browser across desktop, mobile, and tablet. The display scales automatically — prop a tablet up and it works just as well as on a full desktop screen. On mobile, tap the up and down buttons directly;keyboard shortcuts apply when a physical keyboard is connected.
Can I prevent the counter from going below zero?
Yes. Open Settings and set a Count Min of 0 (or any value you choose). The counter will stop at that floor and not count below it. Combine Count Min and Count Max to keep the counter within any range you need.
Can I count by more than one at a time?
Yes. Open Settings and change the Count Change value to any whole number. Set it to 5 and each keypress or button click adds or subtracts 5. Useful when counting items that come in fixed multiples, or when you need to move through a range quickly.
How do the color-coded count levels work?
In Basic Settings, define up to 6 count thresholds and assign a display color to each. As the count crosses a threshold, the display color changes automatically. For example, set green below 50, yellow from 50 to 80, and red above 80 to track room occupancy at a glance — no need to read the number to know where you stand.
Can I use my own sound for the count clicks?
Yes. In Settings, the Sound Up and Sound Down fields accept a URL to any web-accessible audio file in addition to the 35 built-in options. Set different sounds for up and down counts, and adjust the volume of each independently.
How do I save my counter setup?
Configure everything — starting count, sounds, color levels, keyboard shortcuts — then click the create link icon to generate a URL with all your settings encoded. Bookmark that URL and your counter is ready exactly as you left it every time you open it. Share the same link with a colleague and they get the identical setup with one click.
